Most of us have grown up listening to a hindi movie police inspector telling the criminal(mostly the hero) not to take the law in his own hands..."Vijay, Kanoon ko apney haath mein mat lo....."...but,much to the inspector's disgust, vijay went ahead and did just that...."took kanoon in his own hands..."...but how much we admired his act for doing so, with which he got rid of the villain( shakaal or Chenoy seth or Bagga or Billa...you can have your pick...). Somehow, the time has come that we all became Vijay in our own ways and rights. How far will we keep blaming the Government and other agencies for everything wrong in our lifves.? (Filthy surroundings.. pollution...slums...illiteracy...dowry deaths....corruption.... crime....religious fanatacism and the list is very long)...I truly believe that we are responsible for our own miseries in more than one way.We have no regard for cleanliness(read, eat chips and throw the empty pack on the road, spit wherever we feel like, just put our garbage in the colony bin and feel that we have done our bit, without even givingg it a second thought as to what is happening to that garbage), for security (we get agitated whe the guard in a cinema hall tells us not to carry nail cutters and other specified objects inside the hall oe wastes our time in frisking, we keep on tolerating abuse from our family memebers and relatives till it comes out in the open in most severe forms like domestic violence or cruelty for dowry or other forms of abuse, we believe that getting rid of terrorism is the job of only armed forces and the police), for environment (we will use all the four ACs in the home for months together with utter disregard towards our environment, since it is so hot and we can afford it...why bother for something else, three out of ten taps in our house leake but we dont care, we will wash our cars with full pressure pipes,we will not use water from buckets but from showers and taps directly letting gallons of water being wasted away, we will not bother to learn about solar energy or storing rain water, or planting some trees in our surroundings, we will only get our car checked for pollution when the sword of a challan hangs on our neck...). We will criticise the governments for not preventing communal riots but we will not care to see what kind of examples we set for the next generation every day when we discriminate on grounds of religion, caste and region in front of them. It doesn't really matter to us what kind of human beings our kids grow up to be till the time they pass out from the Best engineering, medical and Law colleges and do well for themselves in life (Financially).
We will talk of women empowerment in most of the debates and seminars but would expect that our spouse or mother serves us as soon as we reach home ("she does it out of love you know and as it is I am earning so much what's the need for her to take so much pains and get another diploma or work in a small unknown company....", " Ya, i am a man of open and progressive thinking, i made my daughter study engineering but now she is 23 and i am planning to get her married to a boy from My Caste and Religion, who earns in lakhs and doesn't want my daughter to work( he is so caring)".. "are you crazy, dare she think of marrying a low caste or in another religion..."..." now, she is married ,her husband's home is her home, she has to learn to ADJUST"..."we love our granddaughter ,BUT a grandson will complete the family.".... "come on this is not dowry, we want to give gifts to our daughter" (it doesnt even strike Mr.right that a gift is voluntarily given and not demanded by the in-laws)..Dah.. so much for teaching the poor girl engineering and so much for women empowerment...).
It is hight time we did some introspection and start taking matters in our own hands...poor kanoon can also not save those who do not want to be saved......So, friends, Romans, countrymen...lend me your actions and let us make this world a little better!!!!
